Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, after the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, he revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
