Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
